Position Title
Adult Education Instructor

Position Description
The Adult Education (AE) Instructor uses student assessments to tailor individual learning goals and study plans and provides small group and individualized instruction in adult education to include: reading, writing, math, science, social studies, test taking strategies, GED Test preparation, college preparation, ESL and/or career pathways planning. The AE Instructor recruits and trains volunteer tutors in tutoring strategies and matches tutors with students. This position is supervised by the AE Regional Coordinator.

Job Qualifications
• Bachelor’s degree in education or a related field
• Alaska Teaching Certificate preferred
• Ability to work with adult learners of diverse social-economic and cultural backgrounds
• Experience assessing students’ literacy level and developing individual study plans
• Ability to recognize learning needs, identify appropriate resources and teaching strategies to instruct adults in math, reading, writing, science, social studies, test taking strategies, GED Test preparation, computer skills, and basic college and career readiness skills
• Familiarity with GED (General Education Development) Testing and other high school equivalency options
• Knowledge of career readiness skills and resources, as well as local education and training resources
• Ability to encourage and reinforce positive learning attitudes

Position Duties and Responsibilities
• Instruct students in adult education to include: math, reading, writing, science, social studies, test taking strategies, GED Test preparation, computer skills, and basic college and career readiness skills
• Welcome and recruit students and respond to inquiries from potential students, parents, and referring partner agencies
• Maintain safe, supportive, student focused learning environment
• Conduct student orientation and onboarding to include: Description of services, enrollment of students, administration of assessments in accordance with the organization and state policy, and review assessment results with students in order to develop individual study plans
• Provide students with appropriate referrals to SERRC’s Learning Connection programs, continuing education and training and other community services as needed
• Track and review student progress and use assessment data to tailor instruction
• Maintain student folders with current enrollment and educational information and store securely
• Review and develop instructional resources, materials and strategies for teaching
• Seek out professional development and learning opportunities to continually improve your practice
• Recruit and train volunteers. Support volunteer tutors with lessons and teaching strategies when needed Communicate with staff, students and volunteers to identify tutor/student matches
• Participate as a team member to establish schedules and programming for the Adult Education program and to address student learning needs
• Collect relevant information for report and grant development, and assist with grant writing and reporting
• Other duties as assigned
