DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
• Teach English courses on the Storrs campus in a semester depending on student population and teacher availability
• Participates in orientation activities and provides initial language proficiency assessments of students during the first week of the semester/session
• Develops a course syllabus for each assigned course which takes into consideration the proficiency levels of the enrolled students and includes the following from the UCAELI Curriculum: course description, course objectives, and student learning outcomes
• Develops, administers, and scores mid-term and final projects and assessments for each course
• Keeps accurate records of students’ participation, including class attendance and proficiency scores on assignments, projects, and presentations
• Follows UCAELI policies and procedures regarding student attendance and participation
• Completes mid-term and final evaluations for students and meets with students individually to provide the evaluations and feedback
• Submits final proficiency scores and final checklists for conditionally admitted students according to established deadlines
• Submits final grades into the Peoplesoft Administration System
• Attends regularly scheduled meetings with the UCAELI instructors and staff
• Conveys important information about students and issues that may arise to the UCAELI Director and UCAELI Core Instructor in a timely manner
• Participates in professional development activities
• Performs related work as required
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
• Bachelor’s degree
• TESOL Certificate or coursework towards a Master’s degree in TESOL and teaching experience with adults
• Experience using authentic materials in the ESL classroom
• Demonstrated understanding of learner-centered approaches to language learning
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
• Master’s degree in TESOL or a closely related field
• At least one year teaching experience with adults in a university setting
• Demonstrated expertise in writing course objectives and learning outcomes
APPOINTMENT TERMS
This is a temporary position and compensation will be issued in biweekly payments with an hourly rate determined by past teaching experience. The start date for this position is August 26, 2024 and will continue until December 13, 2024 (15 weeks). There are no paid benefits associated with this position; however, the temporary position may afford the individual an opportunity to purchase optional state employee health insurance at group rates.
