About this job:

Serves as a critical member of DPS Community Hubs delivering high quality instruction and multi-generational interventions. Must be flexible and creative in meeting the needs of a diverse group of English as a Second Language (ESL) and at times, supporting General Educational Development (GED) students so that participants can pursue personal, professional, and civic goals. The services that are provided are intended to educate and support families to also make connections with resources that restore family stability in order to improve educational outcomes for their children.

Over 4,000 individuals attend programs offered through Community Hubs, ESL and GED classes are a foundational component of individualized family success plans. Responsibilities include creating a welcoming and safe environment for all Community Hub participants by building positive relationships; partnering with participants to identify and work towards their long-term goals for family stability; connecting community members with wraparound services at the Community Hub to support them in building skills and accessing resources; and utilizing community center practices, procedures and data systems to deliver high-quality customer service, instruction and demonstrate program outcomes.

What You’ll Do:
• Teaches all levels (zero-beginner/pre-literacy to level four readiness) of ESL to refugee, newcomers, community members, and college-bound students.
• Uses student-centric methodologies and approaches in classes appropriate to student and program goals.
• Writes class syllabus; prepares lesson plans, course materials, and curriculum; teaches classes in accordance with course syllabus and outcomes; and employs multiple teaching styles to match program and student learning styles and goals.
• Diagnoses student placement in level prior to the first week of classes.
• Creates assessments to measure student outcomes and creates and grades tests, quizzes, oral presentations, etc., to measure student progress to outcomes.
• Introduces and effectively uses technology in classes.
• Selects appropriate course materials (from a defined group); assists with material selection and ordering; and maintains and assesses curriculum and materials on a regular basis.
• Tracks, records, and submits student attendance, grades, and progress and completes required reports; tracks and reports on student success rates during and post-class.
• Attends department, team, and other relevant meetings and participates in professional staff development activities.
• Informs students of and upholds school policies.
• Other duties as assigned.

What You’ll Need:
• Bachelor’s Degree in Education or related field (required).
• Master’s Degree in TESOL or related field (preferred).
• Two (2) or more years of ESL teaching experience to adults in a variety of settings.
• Experience teaching using the communicative approach.
• Experience living and working abroad.
• CELTA, or TEFL/TESL certification (minimum of 100 hours in class) required.
• Adult Education and Vocational Certificates (e.g., ABEA) preferred.
• Proficiency with Google Suite products (Sheets, Docs, Slides, and Gmail) Microsoft Office products, including Word, Excel, and Outlook.
• Effective time management and organizational skills.
• Effective verbal and written communication skills.
• Strong attention to detail.
• Effectively handles multiple demands and competing deadlines.
• The ability to take responsibility for one’s own performance.
• Works collaboratively with others on a team.
• This role may require working hours outside of the standard school day, which could include late afternoon, early evening and Saturdays. This flexibility is necessary to provide services to community members seeking these opportunities.
• Aptitude for variety and changing expectations in a fast-paced environment.
• Lead for racial and educational excellence and work to dismantle systems of oppression and inequity in our community, along with believing in and supporting all students so they feel seen and heard with access to high quality education.
• Live and work with a permanent home address in Colorado while working with us.
