Position Function:
Westwood North and Virtual Academies are learning communities for young people who prefer a non-traditional school setting. The primary purpose of the alternative program is to engage students in lifelong learning and continue their education around other life priorities. Students work toward earning their high school diploma.
As the instructional leader, the Director is first and foremost responsible for increasing student achievement by consistently ensuring the implementation of the instructional practices and strategies in accordance with the District policies. The Director is responsible for… providing vision, leadership and management for the Alternative High School’s students, and assuring effective collaboration with parents, District and community departments and services. To foster a learning environment that guides and encourages students to develop and fulfill their academic potential, the Director assures that curricular resources and delivery methods are used effectively through teacher evaluations and feedback in order to promote student achievement and enhance student engagement in the learning process. The Director ensures a safe learning environment for all students and staff and follows guidelines for addressing/reporting issues and incidents.
The position operates with oversight and guidance from the Superintendent or his/her designee in carrying out essential duties and responsibilities to provide overall leadership, quality assurance, managerial and administrative support for the Alternative High School site. The Director assists in the interviewing, hiring, training and evaluation of personnel, as well as overseeing the timely collection, reporting, analysis and presentation of critical information and data in appropriate formats.
Job Qualifications:
Bachelor’s Degree or higher from an accredited institution
Minimum 3 years’ experience in leadership or managerial role, preferred
Current Michigan Department of Education Administrator certificate, preferred
Relevant teaching and teacher training experience, preferred
Knowledge of relevant technology including Apple and Windows applications
Knowledge and understanding of state and/or national content standards
Advanced skills in working with staff and students with diverse needs at various levels
Ability to prioritize so that deadlines are met
Excellent interpersonal and written communication skills
Analytical and problem solving skills
Attention to detail and high level of accuracy
Effective organization and multitask skills
Performance Responsibilities:
Provide vision and leadership to support student achievement and effective operations by supervising staff, developing and implementing performance management plans, identifying professional learning needs and participating in professional learning opportunities.
Effectively participate in the employment process to ensure an effective site team is in place. Provide supervision through assigning work, helping create personal development plans, consistently monitoring and evaluating employee effectiveness and communicating and coaching employee development. Actively recognize accomplishments and address issues to ensure productive site operations.
Ensure the safety of staff and students by maintaining the site and classroom for operation.
Perform a wide range of managerial responsibilities including, but not limited to: staff supervision, scheduling, technology and facilities.
Represent the District in the community, communicate and collaborate with families and community members.
Analyze the professional development needs of the staff and align implementation with the instructional vision and District goals.
Plan, prepare and deliver the identified instructional tools, practices and strategies that facilitate active learning experiences and support the instructional vision for the site, effectively monitoring and using the materials and resources for use in educational activities.
Prepare and present required reports on student progress, achievement and activities, ensuring accuracy in numerical analysis and presentation. Compiles, analyzes and uses assessment data to measure student growth, guide instruction and/or academic intervention for each student and the site.
Demonstrate effective leadership, team building and written skills.
Instruct, monitor and evaluate teachers and students in the use of learning materials and equipment to ensure fidelity of instruction and student performance/evaluation. Observe, evaluate and report staff and student performance and development.
Maintain accurate and complete records of students’ progress and development. Update all necessary records accurately and completely as required by laws, and District policies and procedures.
Manage student behavior and apply appropriate disciplinary measures when necessary. Perform duties including, but not limited to, student support, counseling students with academic problems and providing encouragement.
Participate in the assurance and accreditation process to ensure that the site passes or meets performance plans.
Keep up-to-date with research-based practices and developments in subject areas and professional development, including, but not limited to, organization-wide initiatives.
Provide, solicit and respond constructively to formal and informal feedback.
Special Knowledge/Skills:
Skilled in interdisciplinary planning, collaborative, and able to work well with a wide range of constituents (colleagues, parents, students, board members, etc.)
Able to lead diverse learners and well-versed in instructional strategies for serving students of different skill levels in the same classroom
Deep understanding of data-driven decision making and formative assessment used to plan and modify instructional practices
Experienced in integrating technology into their teaching and can support student learning using technology.
