Summary
Use appropriate teaching methods to facilitate student learning outcomes in outdoor leadership, wildland fire science, parks and recreation stewardship, sustainable development, and other related courses.
Duties
• Teach synchronous or asynchronous lecture and laboratory courses using current technology applicable to the discipline which may include face to face, field-based, online, and/or video-conferenced courses as needed.
• Collaborate with faculty on course design and development to offer appropriately challenging coursework that helps students realize their full potential as learners.
• Ensure course content, activities, and assignments are developed. Course content includes, but is not limited to, syllabus, course policies, video lectures, assignments, exams, instructions, grading rubrics, etc.
• Meet all designated course instruction guidelines, including delivering lectures and labs, leading field trips (as applicable), posting weekly announcements with relevant information, monitoring and participating in discussions, grading student coursework within 72 hours of submission deadline, providing students timely and specific feedback, responding to student email inquiries within 24 hours, maintaining weekly office hours (virtual or in person, depending on need), and other requirements as established by the Director of Outdoor Programs.
• Maintain frequent and open communication with the Director of Outdoor Programs, faculty and staff through email, mail, telephone, and any other medium deemed appropriate. Be available at least once a semester to attend a virtual or in person meeting with the Director of Outdoor Programs.
• Submit mid-term and end of term grades by required deadline according to WNMU policies.
• Maintains a positive, safe, inclusive student-centric learning environment that supports success by enforcing WNMU policies to include student code of conduct, academic integrity, and those established by the Department of Natural Sciences, Director of Outdoor Programs, and Office of Academic Affairs.
• Model professional standards and ethics in accordance with WNMU and the Department of Natural Sciences.
• Performs other duties as assigned.
Education/Background
Master’s degree in the discipline or subfield teaching or Master’s degree in any field and 18 graduate credit hours in the discipline or subfield teaching. Ph.D. preferred. For all courses: Bilingual (Spanish) preferred.
Job Knowledge
Instruction in field-based, face-to-face, and online environments. Working with underprepared students in small classroom and/or outdoor settings. Experience in a supervisory position. Background in current evidence-based teaching strategies and innovative approaches to pedagogy will be an asset. Must be able to adapt to instructional needs of the department depending on circumstances. Must be knowledgeable of university policies and procedures. Must be able to handle multiple deadlines and maintain accuracy. Must be sensitive to cultural differences within the University and community. Fluent in Microsoft Office Applications. May be required to work additional hours or days depending on circumstances.
Working Conditions/ Physical Demands (With or Without Accommodations)
Normal classroom, field, and laboratory environments. May be required to lift normal office equipment and materials. Visual acuity to read information from computer screens, forms and other printed materials and information. Able to speak (enunciate) clearly in conversation and general communication. Hearing ability for verbal communication/conversation/responses via telephone, telephone systems, and face-to-face interactions. Manual dexterity for typing, writing, standing, and reaching, flexibility, body movement for bending, crouching, walking, kneeling and prolonged sitting. May be required to work in outdoor settings over multiple days in difficult weather conditions. May be required to work additional hours or days depending on circumstances.

May be required to hold additional certifications, depending on teaching position (e.g. wilderness first responder or others)
