Job Title: Professional College STEM… Tutor Department: FAES | ATI Student Success Services-JM Under supervision of the grant manager and to fulfill the mission of a Student Support Services TRIO grant, the Professional Tutor will use strengths-based teaching/tutoring methods to assist students in learning content material for college chemistry and math courses through sustained individual or small group learning sessions. To most effectively help students learn course material, the professional tutor will create and adapt individualized approaches/strategies for each student, evaluate individual student learning, and adjust teaching/tutoring approaches for effectiveness. The professional tutor will: help students build proficiency in basic math; learn how to apply their learning in math and chemistry to technical courses; and provide strengths-based academic coaching incorporating a high level of sensitivity to and awareness of students’ holistic needs. As a grant team member, the professional tutor will attend team meetings, contribute to team program evaluation, log service contacts into the grant database, and assist in recruiting students to access and continually use grant services. The professional tutor will collaborate with faculty, administration, and campus staff on behalf of students and participate in professional development/training. 80% The professional tutor will: provide sustained teaching/tutoring in STEM (primarily chemistry and math) course content to college students individually and in small groups; provide tutoring that helps students build proficiency in core math and chemistry concepts, learn how to effectively take tests in specific classes, and build a foundation to transfer learning to higher level math and chemistry courses; help students learn how to apply math and chemistry to ATI technical courses and other general education courses; assist students in learning how to effectively use/navigate OSU’s course management system, ebooks, and other learning tools and systems; and provide sensitive, encouraging coaching/encouragement for students that seamlessly integrates into tutoring sessions, including coaching for communicating with professors, understanding professor expectations, developing academic goals, and monitoring academic progress; The professional tutor will assist students to learn how to most effectively use their strengths and apply previous educational experiences to college; to assess academic mindset, organization, and study habits; and to provide instruction on problem-solving and critical/creative thinking. The professional tutor will foster students’ ability to explore options, make decisions, and solve problems related to their academics and will manage scheduling and adjusting appointments to meet student needs. 15% The professional tutor will: communicate/collaborate with classroom faculty and other campus partners; continuously refine their teaching/tutoring approach to meet students’ needs; prepare for tutoring sessions, develop teaching/tutoring materials, and develop goals for working with students individually and in small groups; and participate in professional development. 5% The professional tutor will collaborate as a grant team member, assist with helping recruit students to access and use grant services, log contact data in grant database, participate in grant team activities and services, and other duties as assigned. Minimum Education Required: Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in education, STEM subject area or an applicable area. Desired Education: Master’s Degree, and/or secondary education teaching license. Required Experience: 3-5 years teaching/tutoring in applicable STEM subjects at the secondary level and/or 2-year college level. • Ability to maintain highest level of confidentiality and handle sensitive student data and information responsibly. Demonstrated capacity to build and sustain positive relationships with diverse populations of students who are first-generation college students, have high financial need, and/or students with disabilities. • Ability to effectively teach/tutor students to help them improve their academic knowledge and performance while fostering a working relationship built on mutual respect and trust. • Ability to establish effective working relationships with students that sustain through multiple sessions. • Ability to effectively communicate with and influence students using understanding and empathy. • Ability to effectively collaborate with students, faculty, staff, and administrators, including the ability to work effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds. • Ability to work in a positive team-oriented manner. Demonstrated experience successfully building, fostering, and maintaining educational and institutional relationships. • Ability to be self-motivated, work independently, and use work time effectively. • Ability to use MS Word and Excel. Ability to navigate classroom management platform/tools, ebooks, learning apps. • Ability to make ethical decisions in doing what is best for both students and the grant/institution/university. Ability to diffuse interpersonal tension and assist with problem resolution. Desired Experience: • Experience providing support services to first generation, students with high financial need and students with disabilities in a college setting. • Experience providing college tutoring in entry-level chemistry, developmental math, college algebra, and college trigonometry. This is a grant funded position.
