About ASSIST: ASSIST Community Services Centre has provided settlement support to newcomers since 1977. Our Language Instruction for Newcomers to Canada (LINC) program is a federally funded program providing immigrants and refugees with the English language and cultural skills necessary for life in Canada. We offer a variety of full-time and part-time classes both online and in-person at our location in southwest Edmonton. We strongly value a diverse and multilingual workforce.

Substitute Teacher Job Description

Position Summary: The Substitute LINC Instructor is responsible for following and or creating the planning, delivery, and potentially assessments, of language instruction to adult newcomer students in the LINC program, as well as providing required reports and documentation to the classroom teacher and or LINC Coordinator.

· Conduct needs assessment with studentsif needed.

· Follow course… outlines as indicated by classroom teacher if subbing is for a period longer than a couple of days.

· Plan theme-based lessons and modules that are aligned with the CLBs and meet the expectations of Portfolio-Based Language Assessment (PBLA) if needed and if subbing is for more than a day.

· Develop and administer level-appropriate, real-world assessment tasks in Listening, Speaking, Reading, and Writing if subbing period of a class is for over 5 days.

· Deliver appropriate and creative instruction in language development while also teaching about Canada and Canadian culture while following classroom teacher course outline.

· Ensure task-based delivery of lessons, using a variety of materials, strategies, and techniques to keep students engaged

· Provide a report on student performance on daily class workto the classroom teacher and or coordinator.

· Collaborate with members of the LINC instructional and administrative team if needed,

· Manage the classroom to ensure an optimum learning environment working with culturally diverse populations

· Attend and participate relevant professional development opportunities, including conferences if available.

· Maintain accurate daily attendance registers, and submit all required documents including final grades, reports as required to the classroom teacher and coordinator.

· Adhere to all LINC, ASSIST, PBLA, and funder policies and expectations

Qualifications and Skills:

· Certificate, Diploma, or Degree in Teaching English recognized by TESL Canada

· Bachelor’s degree in education

· TESL Certification an asset and preferred.

· Excellent oral and written English communication skills.

· Previous teaching experience preferred

· Demonstrated knowledge and familiarity of Canadian Language Benchmarks, Portfolio-Based Language Assessment (PBLA), and Task-Based Language Teaching (TBLT)

· Good knowledge of Canada and Canadian culture, experience living and working in Canada

· Experience with multi-cultural clientele, especially those with limited English skills

· Able to work independently without supervision and contribute to a team

· Highly organized, with exceptional time-management, decision-making, and prioritization skills

· Strong computer skills

· Google Suite knowledge (Google classroom, docs, sheets, forms, & slides) an asset

· First-aid training an asset

· CLB Bootcamp certificate
