Key Responsibilities
Tutoring Services: Provide scheduled and walk-in tutoring for students in developmental and general education courses.
Learning Support: Assist students with a variety of academic needs, including clarifying course concepts, discussing readings, predicting test questions, and offering guidance on assignments.
Resource Development: Oversee and create materials for learning communities and reading circles to enhance the learning experience.
Record Keeping: Maintain accurate records of all tutorial sessions, reading circles, and learning communities.
Academic Integrity: Ensure integrity in student work and provide constructive feedback during tutorial sessions.
Feedback and Reporting: Offer insights and feedback on Academic Success Center usage to the Center Manager.
Professional Development: Participate in ongoing tutor training and development sessions.
Student Advocacy: With the student’s permission, notify the Center Manager or the Vice President for Academic Affairs of any significant academic concerns.
Collaboration: Work closely with other tutoring staff and volunteers to coordinate and enhance student services.
Learning Environment: Foster a positive and motivating environment that encourages academic success.
Special Initiatives: Develop engaging activities for mid-term and finals weeks to help students prepare for exams.
Mentorship (Optional): Serve as a mentor to one or more students, providing additional guidance and support.
Course Management: Assist with classroom setup and course management, including working with remote instructors.
Technology Use: Be comfortable using technology such as Zoom and campus management systems like Populi to support student learning.
Additional Duties: Perform other duties as assigned to support the Academic Success Center’s goals.
Qualifications
Educational Background: An Associate’s degree is required; a Bachelor’s degree is preferred. For student or peer applicants, a minimum 3.0 GPA, sophomore-level standing in higher education, and a faculty recommendation are required.
Subject Matter Expertise: Demonstrated competence in the subjects you will tutor.
Technological Proficiency: Ability to use computer tutorials and technology-based learning tools effectively.
Communication Skills: Strong interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills are essential.
Organizational Skills: Ability to organize and present material effectively to reinforce learning.
Confidentiality: Must maintain the confidentiality of all student information.
Independence and Judgment: Ability to work independently, make sound decisions, and manage time effectively.
Technical Skills: Proficiency in Microsoft Office and data entry.
Reliability: Must be dependable with regular and timely attendance.
Background Check: Must be able to pass a background check.
Working Conditions
This role will primarily be conducted in an office environment with limited exposure to hazardous materials. The majority of the shift will involve sitting and working on a computer. Adequate vision is required to fulfill the responsibilities of the job.
Dress Code
Business casual attire is expected within the office. Jeans are acceptable as long as they are clean and in good condition. If you have any questions about appropriate attire, please consult with your supervisor.
