Visiting Assistant Professor, Art and Design

Jacksonville State University is seeking applicants for a visiting position in Visual Communication/Graphic Design at the rank of Assistant Professor. This is a 9-month fixed term equivalent for the 2024 – 2025 academic year. The selected candidate will be expected to teach a 3/3 at all levels of visual communication design from undergraduate to graduate, fully engage in departmental duties, committee work, and campus activities. Continued scholarship/creative activity is encouraged and supported. The salary for this position is $54,000.00 annually.

The Department of Art + Design at Jacksonville State University, accredited by NASAD, offers an MFA in Visual Communication Design and BA and BFA degrees with concentrations in Ceramics, Illustration, Graphic Design, Painting, Photography, and Printmaking. The department also offers minors in Studio Art and Art History.

The University:

Jacksonville State University, also known as the “Friendliest Campus in the South,” dates back to 1883 and offers 24 fields of study for bachelors’ and masters’ degrees and an enrollment of nearly 10,000 students.

Located one hour east of Birmingham, an hour and a half west of Atlanta, and two hours south of Chattanooga, the city of Jacksonville is surrounded by the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains & Talladega National Forest. The area offers breathtaking scenery year round, miles of hiking trails, biking, bird watching, hunting, fishing, and camping. Specific points of local interest are the Chief Ladiga Trail (Alabama’s premiere rail-trail), The Berman Museum & Anniston Museum of Natural History, and Cheaha State Park.

Essential Functions:

The selected candidate will be expected to teach all levels of visual communication design from undergraduate to graduate; fully engage in departmental duties such as committee work; and engage in campus activities.

Physical Requirements:

Candidates should possess the ability to prepare and present lectures, evaluate students, and be available for advising students during office hours. Candidates should be capable of reading documents written in English. Candidates should be able to move from building to building on campus and travel off-campus occasionally for professional meetings or development.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:

Successful candidate must have a broad understanding of contemporary critical theory and practice, mastery of current industry standard design software, and a strong grounding in traditional design, and typography demonstrated in her/his own and students’ work.

Minimum Qualifications:

This position requires an MFA from a regionally accredited institution in Graphic Design, Visual Communication, or similar degree with a concentration in design.

Experience using current Adobe Creative Suite and industry standard software required.

Special Instructions to Applicants:

Strong grounding in traditional design and typography in her/his own and students’ work, will be demonstrated in the candidate’s portfolio.

To demonstrate a record of professional and creative accomplishment, creative work samples are required to be submitted in a digital portfolio. Submission of 20 samples of creative work in pdf or URL format, and 20 samples of students’ work in pdf or URL format are required.
