POSITION SUMMARY Requires practical application of fire service education, fire rescue procedure development and administration. An adjunct community college instructor is an instructor hired for one semester to teach one or more courses for which he/she is qualified to teach. The adjunct instructor reports to the appropriate Instructional Coordinator and/or Department Chair; provides quality instruction for the assigned courses. The instructor works with full-time faculty in assessing students and following all course guidelines. Willingness to teach at other campus sites is required. Adjunct instructors may submit preferences for locations and loads. Position is subject to all terms and provisions of the Joliet Junior College adjunct faculty contract. ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES AND KEY RESPONSIBILITIES 1. Teach introductory and advanced classes in Fire Science, Homeland Security, Emergency Management. 2. Help develop, coordinate and upgrade curriculum and teaching materials required by state and federal regulations for fire programs. 3. Work closely with other faculty, special programs and services within the college to determine placement, curriculum, National Fire Academy FESHE certifications, Office of the State Fire Marshal certifications and support academic staff. 4. Participate in appropriate department meetings and recruitment activities; serve on committees as needed. 5. Comply with departmental curriculum, grading standards, attendance policies, textbook choices, and assessments, and other established processes. Attend classes regularly; return college reports, credentials, and other requested documentation in a timely manner; effectively communicate with appropriate staff and chair. 6. Comply with all legal and ethical obligations, including FERPA, ADA, and other regulatory legislations. 7. Communicate discrepancies to appropriate officials. Commit to furthering the mission, goals, and core values of the college at all times. 8. Meet other contractual obligations as spelled out in the Joliet Junior College adjunct faculty contract. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS 1. Associates degree in Fire Science or EMS with seven years field experience in fire/EMS; or Bachelor’s degree in any subject matter with seven years field experience in fire/EMS; or equivalent combination of education and experience. OSFM BOF/FFII (plus other OSFM certifications for specific courses as assigned). 2. OSFM Instructor I certification; or equivalent certification and teaching experience. 3. Ability to establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with other members of the college and community, displaying cultural competence as well as emotional intelligence. 4. Bachelor’s degree in Fire Science or related field OSFM Instructor II certification Current or previous IDPH EMS licensure (EMT or paramedic) Prior community college and/or fire service teaching experience OSFM Fire Officer I Certification 2. English and Spanish verbal and written communication proficiency. 3. Demonstrated multicultural competence PHYSICAL DEMANDS 1. Standard classroom equipment and software. 2. Standard fire service activities and must be able to lift 35 pounds WORKING CONDITIONS 1. Classroom, skills lab, and simulation teaching environment.
