POSITION SUMMARY:

The Senior Language Instructor supports the SOFTS program by providing foreign language instruction in listening, reading, writing, and speaking skills as well as regional and culture subjects.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Provide foreign language instruction in listening, reading, writing, and speaking skills as well as regional and cultural subjects
• Integrate technology in classroom instruction and homework, such as Smart Boards, BlackBoard, RapidRote, and SharePoint
• Develop learning materials as required
• Utilize computer skills to organize data and teaching materials
• Use communicative, learner-centered, and task-based LREC teaching strategies for adult learners
• Develop lesson plans and integrate Transparent Language CL-150 into curriculum
• Create materials specifically for online presentation to SOF personnel
• Upload materials in a Learning Management System (LMS)
• Install and enable foreign fonts as needed to use in instructional materials
• Be available to teach and sub classes as needed and conduct demo classes.

Instructor management and quality control
• Assist instructors with syllabi, lesson plans, course material uploads.
• Conduct and verify student level placement assessments.
• Track student progress and assist instructor with adjustments as needed.
• Ensure Homeroom setup meets all QC requirements.
• Facilitate tutoring requests.
• Observe classes (live and recorded) and fill out observation reports, develop action plans and provide feedback to instructors.
• Assist with interviews and hiring process for new instructors including supervising training, providing personalized coaching and strategies.
• Monitor instructor training, provide feedback and assign additional training as needed.

Material Development:
• Create teaching resources in TL and maintain organized department files.
• Develop newsletters, web content, forms and reports to support management.

Administrative Tasks:
• Attend workshops and scheduled meetings.
• Handle tasks such as approving timesheets, training employees, and filling out necessary forms and reports.
• Manage department and tutoring schedules.
• Monitor and respond to emails, telephone calls, and chat platforms.
• Other duties as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS, KNOWLEDGE AND SKILL REQUIRED:
• One of the following:
• At least 2 years of recent (completed within the last 18 months) experience teaching foreign language at the secondary level or higher (minimum of 200 classroom hours) and a Master’s degree in foreign language teaching, secondary education, applied linguistics, or a closely related field or
• At least 6 years of recent (completed within the last 18 months) related experience teaching at the secondary level or higher (minimum of 600 classroom hours) and a Master’s degree in any field or
• At least 6 years of recent (completed within the last 18 months) related experience teaching at the secondary level or higher (minimum of 12 week course), a Bachelor’s degree in any field, and documentation showing the instructor taught at least three 3-6 month courses in ILR 1 to 2 or 6-9 months in ILR 2 to 3 to military students and the average test scores exceeded the goal by at least a half point
• At least ILR Level 2 as measured by DoD test
• A score of at least 573 on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) PBT, or TOEFL iBT score of at least 89 overall and at least 21 each in Reading, Listening, Speaking, and Writing
• A score of at least 89 on the English Comprehension Level (ECL) test
• At least a proficiency level 2 or Advanced-High (ACTFL) on an Oral Proficiency Interview (OPI)
• General professional proficiency (a language rating of ILR level 3 or ACTFL Superior) or higher in the specified foreign language
• Must meet target language qualifications: Oral Proficiency Interview (OPI) or 2-skill OPI from the DLIFLC; an interview certified by the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL); satisfactory completion of Defense Language Proficiency Test
• Competency in classroom management, developing lesson plans, integrating Transparent Language CL-150 into curriculum, and using supplemental materials
• Minimum of 40 hours of training in only language teaching
• 6+ months of experience teaching language through web video conferencing technology to small classes (less than 10 students)
• Excellent English and foreign language skills – both oral and written
• Experience using MS Office (Word, PowerPoint, and Excel) and common media players (e.g. Windows Media Player, Real Player, SMART Boards, etc.) as they relate to modern LREC instruction

SOFTS Instructor Specific Requirement:
• A minimum of 300 hours of training in synchronous online language teaching; have at least one year of experience teaching language through web video conferencing technology to small classes (less than 10 students). Have prepared curriculum, lesson plans, and training support materials for online language instruction; have created materials specifically for online presentation to SOF personnel; and have created classes, organizing homepages, and uploading materials in a Learning Management System (LMS).

Physical and Environmental Requirements:
• May be required to use computer screen for extensive periods of time.
• Occasional lifting of 15 to 20 lbs.
• Extended working hours and travel may be necessary.

Salary is dependent on experience: $73,028.80
