Adjunct Instructor

POSITION SUMMARY
An adjunct instructor’s primary function is to instruct classes according to approved course syllabus using accepted and effective teaching methods. Parts of the instructor’s duties are to maintain current and accurate attendance, grade records, and develop stimulating daily lesson plans. Faculty members are also expected to remain current in their teaching field, participate and… demonstrate evidence of professional growth.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

General Job Responsibilities:
• Demonstrate excellence in teaching and instruction.
• Demonstrate evidence of professional growth activities and academic credentials.
• Carry out the responsibilities specific to his/her department and/or program.
• Contribute to the university through participation in school activities (graduation, orientation, etc.).
• Be knowledgeable and adhere to the university policies and procedures, including accurate and timely submission of grades, CLO data, and paperwork.
• Ensure the classroom is supplied with instructional materials as scheduled (e.g., textbooks, resources, and equipment).
• Review UAV Bulletin in classroom.
• Additional expectations depending on program.

Teaching and Instruction Responsibilities
• Begin class on time in an orderly, organized fashion.
• Be courteous to and approachable by students.
• Utilize effective motivational tools to motivate students in the topic/skill.
• Distribute current administration approved Syllabi first day of course.
• Observe and study new instructional techniques for lecture, laboratory or performance to strive for continuous growth.
• Keep abreast of industry and technological changes within the program/topic of instruction.
• Improve instruction through revising and updating curriculum and materials of instruction when appropriate.
• Adhere to policies and procedures on tracking and submitting attendance, grades, and CLO data.
• Establish office and tutoring hours and assist students during these hours or by appointment.
• Prepare and update program syllabi and lesson plan accordingly.
• Create and adhere to established methods for evaluating students.
• Instruct and evaluate students with management approved materials.
• Instructors shall adhere to schedule provided by administration indicating class schedule, office and/or tutoring time for assisting students.
• Contribute to the program review process.

Faculty Development Responsibilities
• Instructors are required to participate in a minimum of four faculty development session per year. These sessions can include professional growth activities, faculty development held by the University or other outside agencies.
• Instructors are required to maintain and update annually the Faculty Development Form and accreditation documentation (if applicable).

DISTANCE EDUCATION INSTRUCTOR

Specific Job Responsibilities:
• Instructs and evaluates students according to the lab/lecture/externship matrix outlined in the catalog, using approved materials, and assigning the appropriate ratio of homework. Instructor must use UAV rubric for grading threaded discussions. Instructor must include in syllabus late work policy stating that students can’t make up work once grades are released to students in grade book for that assignment.
• Submits grades and attendance timely. Records student attendance hourly
• Interacts with students timely. This is defined as: Answering student questions within 24 hours; Essays should be graded within 5 days of the due date; Homework should be graded within 48 hours of due date; Tests and quizzes should be graded within 72 hours of due date if there are essay questions. They should be graded within 48 hours of due date if there are no essay questions. All assignments should be graded within 72 hours.
• Staying actively engaged in the class. This is defined as: Instructors must respond to each student’s initial post in the threaded discussion; participating in threaded discussions at least 4 days a week. Instructor should post a substantive comment in the threaded discussions at least every other day. In other words, there shall never be two consecutive days without instructor comment in the threaded discussions. This includes weekends and holidays.
• Providing meaningful feedback. This is defined as: Responses in the threaded discussions must be substantive. “Good job” or “well done” will not count as substantive comments; Instructor must include comments on all graded items.
• Participates in faculty training and development.
• Participates in university sponsored activities, such as student orientation, re-entry meetings, and graduation as well as community events.
• Keeps abreast of changes in the industry and makes recommendations for curriculum revisions based on these changes.
• Attends faculty/staff meetings or faculty development sessions.
• Implements and adheres to all school policies. Instructor must mandate that students respond to threaded discussion question by Wednesday and respond to two other students’ posts by Saturday midnight. This should be in the syllabus.
• Creates and obtains approval to use daily lesson plans, assessments, and syllabi. Incorporates instructional aids such as video clips, chat, synchronous events or guest lecturers to enhance instruction.
• Review and understand the Student Orientation Package, Student Handbook, Employee Handbook and Catalog
• Must be familiar with the University’s mission and objectives.
• Provide tutoring and informal advising to student as needed.

Standard Procedures for Distance Education

Attendance

Attendance is automatically recorded when a student logs into the LMS. Only logging into the class is not counted as attendance, student must actively engage in the course. Active engagement is considered:
• Email instructor about course content
• Participate in threaded discussions.
• Submit assignments.

If a student becomes inactive, instructor must email student after 7 days of no activity. In addition, after 14 days of no activity the instructor must email the student regarding their inactivity and the potential removal from the course.

Class Preparation

Instructors are responsible for preparing themselves for class. All materials needed for class should be prepared prior to class beginning. Instructors should notify the Online Coordinator if broken links or other issues are discovered with the portal.
• Post your name, picture and bio on the course home page.
• Ensure that the syllabus is posted.
• Write a welcome message and review attendance and academic policies in clear language.
• Remind them that you will be calling them if they do not post regularly. If they know they are going to be unable to post, ask them to notify you if possible.
• Get to know your students. It is important for the student to get to know each other. Have students post information about themselves and their goals as part of the first threaded discussion question.

Grading of Students

All assignments should be graded within 72 hours. The online grade book must be kept up to date.

Class schedules

Student questions and emails are to be responded to within 24 hours.

Tutoring

Instructors are required to offer and provide tutoring to students by phone, chat, or other medium as requested by student.

Instruct

Instructors shall follow the approved syllabus using techniques appropriate for the course material. Instructors will evaluate the aptitude of each student and give additional attention to students who request help or to those students performing poorly.

Experience and Education Qualifications

Non-Degree Program/Occupational Associate
• A minimum of 3 years related experience. Instructors shall be assigned based on their major and minor academic preparation and/or related experience.

Academic Associate Degree Program
• Instructors teaching general education shall hold a minimum of a master’s degree. Instructors at a minimum shall have earned 18 semester or equivalent hours of coursework in the area of their teaching discipline.
• Instructors teaching courses other than general education shall hold bachelor’s degrees at a minimum and shall be assigned based on their major and minor academic preparation and/or related experience.

Bachelor’s Degree Program
• Instructors teaching general education shall hold a minimum of a master’s degree. Instructors at a minimum shall have earned 18 semester or equivalent hours of coursework in the area of their teaching discipline.
• Instructors teaching courses other than general education should hold bachelor’s degrees at a minimum and shall be assigned based on their major and minor academic preparation and/or related experience.

Master’s Degree Program
• All master’s program faculty should have appropriate graduate degrees. At least one-half of the graduate-level courses are to be taught by faculty possessing terminal degrees. Professional certification is not a substitute for a terminal degree
