Job Summary

The Department of Social Sciences at the University of Texas at Tyler is seeking a tenure-track Assistant Professor of Criminal Justice to teach in the Criminal Justice program to begin August 15, 2025. Duties include teaching a 3/3 course-load, active scholarship agenda, and service to the university and local community.

The Department of Social Sciences incorporates Anthropology, Criminal Justice, Economics, Geography, Social Work, Sociology and Public Administration. UT Tyler is an equal opportunity employer committed to achieving excellence and strength through diversity.

Essential Functions

To include, but not limited to:
• Development and implementation of undergraduate and graduate courses in criminal justice.
• Responsible for recruiting and retaining undergraduate and graduate students.

Required Qualifications
• PhD in Criminal Justice, Criminology, or related discipline from an accredited university (ABD is acceptable to apply but must have the degree awarded by August 15, 2025).
• Ability to teach undergraduate and graduate research methods in an in-person and online format.
• Evidence of teaching undergraduate students in an accredited community college and/or university setting.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills.
• Ability to work independently.
• Skills and confidence with technology.

Preferred Qualifications
• Previous professional experience in the field of Criminal Justice or Public Administration.
• Ability to teach in the Masters in Public Administration program.
• Ability to teach juvenile justice related undergraduate courses.
• Ability to teach courses that may be cross-listed with Sociology and Social Work.

Accompanying Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Competencies
• Experience in instructional design and course development, including online teaching and active learning strategies.
• Ability to develop and maintain effective and constructive collaborative relationships with faculty and administration throughout the university.
• Record of professional activities related to criminal justice and education.

Additional Information

The retirement plan for this position is Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS), subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least 135 days in length. This position has the option to elect the Optional Retirement Program (ORP) instead of TRS, subject to the position being 40 hours per week and at least 135 days in length.

This position is security-sensitive and subject to Texas Education Code Section 51.215, which authorizes the employer to obtain criminal history record information. Applicants selected must be able to show proof of eligibility to work in the United States by time of hire.
