ChemTalk is a 501(c)(3) chemistry education nonprofit looking for 5-6 qualified high school chemistry teachers with at least 2 years of chemistry teaching experience to create a set of comprehensive teacher-facing and student-facing resources for use inside and outside high school chemistry classrooms.
There are three types of resources we are interested in creating…
1) Materials that teach teachers chemistry; Chemistry teachers do not necessarily have chemistry expertise but rather have general science or education backgrounds. Many online chemistry resources exist, but very few resources target the deep level of high school chemistry content knowledge required for successful teaching. We aim to create a comprehensive set of resources made available to chemistry teachers who do not necessarily have a strong chemistry background.
2) Materials that help teachers teach students chemistry; After a teacher understands chemistry, they need to construct or access curriculum maps, unit plans, and lesson plans to communicate and engage students in that content knowledge. These materials are teacher-facing, but they outline and structure how teachers will share with students. In the context of in-person, “curriculum” often describes these types of materials.
3) Student materials for teachers to share or for students to access independently. Student materials can be as simple as a worksheet with practice problems and as complex as a guided inquiry activity.
You are an ideal candidate for this position if:
• You have 2 years of experience teaching high school chemistry. Of our team of 5-6, we are looking for 2-3 individuals who have a chemistry background (bachelor’s and/or master’s degrees in chemistry) and 2-3 individuals who have a general science/education background but who have been placed into a chemistry teaching position. Individuals from both of these groups will be able to contribute valuable information based on their experience.
• You are able to commit around 20-30 hours/month or 5-7 hours/week volunteering at ChemTalk
• You are an excellent communicator
• You have a strong love of chemistry and desire to share it with students
• You have a strong understanding of curriculum guidelines at the national/state level
